Take a trip to Jungle Island Miami where visitors come face to beak with stunning tropical birds in replicas of their natural habitats. The self-styled Island also houses a liger (a cross breed of a lion and a tiger) and for smaller children there is the chance to get up close with a family of Marmoset monkeys, the worlds smallest primate. South Beach is a must-see destination for any visitors to Miami. Relax on this famous beach and see surfers ride the turquoise waves, models strutting along a sandy catwalk and rollerbladers glide along Ocean Drive.
To get out of the sun for a while, shadier spots on the South Beach stretch include Nikki Beach Club and Opium Garden which are both authentic Miami hangouts. For some great fresh seafood head to Joe’s Stone Crab and be sure to save room for some famous lime pie.
Ocean Drive is sure to delight with it’s art deco buildings and glamorous array of hotels. Return to the golden age of architecture and opulence as you wander along this famous strip. Pop into the Art Deco District Welcome Center for a self-guided audio tour of the impressive Art Deco District with over 800 buildings from the 1930s and ‘40s.
While there are many distinct neighbourhoods and districts within Miami proper, few are more lively than Little Havana. Built up as an expat enclave of authentic Cuban life, this neighbourhood houses a community of Cubans who left their homeland in pursuit of the American Dream after Castro came to power. Smoke a cuban cigar, eat some incredible food and listen to the sounds of Latin music coming from local record shops as you stroll through this charming part of town.
For visitors who are interested in seeing the wild side of Miami, Everglades National Park is a fantastic destination. This massive area is often referred to as a swamp or marsh but is actually a slow moving river and the water source for one out of every three residents in all of Florida. The area is home to 67 endangered species and it is the only place in the world where the American Alligator and the American Crocodile coexist in the wild. It’s possible to explore the area by foot, boat or hydroplane and is well worth the trip.
