When my family and I first moved to Alberta, Canada from Alabama in the USA we had a lot of work to do on the property in order to make it both livable and likable. Naturally we make a list of priorities in terms of what we would fix up first, the garden being the last item on the list. Our new neighbors not only had nice homes but they also had these beautiful gardens and I’d be a fraud if I didn’t tell you that I was very envious. After renovating the main living areas like the bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bathrooms, I made a decision to go to see a lender and borrow some money to get the garden done, ignoring the final rooms in the home, or at least putting them off until a later date.
This was a bold move but one which I have never regretted for a moment since I did it and if you are struggling with a similar issue, here is exactly why I believe that you should bump the garden area up your list of priorities.
Adding Value
I used to work for Investar USA, a real estate company in the south of the USA, and this meant that I had an idea around what added value to a property. This wasn’t my main reason for updating the garden but it certainly was a benefit which I could count on. When people search for homes to buy they are more prepared to spend money on a property which has beautiful gardens so in investing in your garden you can actually add value to your home, and make it more desirable.
Space
It is a ridiculous notion to think that you would have a room in your home which was unusable, but having a garden which you cannot enjoy is tantamount to this. The outdoor space is usually very large, larger than most rooms, and it is part of your property. When you invest in your garden you can ensure that you are making the most of this space.
Events and Enjoyment
Inviting neighbors over, watching the kids play on the grass in a safe space and enjoying quiet moments on your own as you take in your very own slice of nature, these are all huge benefits of investing in your garden. You may not realize that you need it but trust me, when you invest in your garden, you can count on a beautiful place to enjoy your time.
Enviable
I never invested in the garden for vanity but I will confess that it feels great when someone offers some positive comments about what you have done with the garden. Instead of me feeling envy towards others now, they often say that they are envious of us, and it truly is a nice feeling to have.
The garden should be a beautiful space in your home, don’t overlook it.
