Italy is known the world over for many things, including its fabulous fashion scene and being the birthplace of world-class painters. What it really stands out for, in my eyes, is its delicious cuisine, with pizza one of its most famous exports.
As such I don’t think there’s any better place to eat pizza than Rome. As you might expect, given the fact that it’s the country’s capital, the city contains thousands of restaurants where you can tuck into delicious fare. We’ve compiled a list of a few of what we think are Rome’s best pizzerias, though there are plenty more great establishments that are just waiting to be discovered.
Pizzeria da Vittorio
If you’re considering booking a low-cost flight to Rome with the intention of trying some authentic Italian pizza, I recommend you head to Pizzeria da Vittorio. This eatery – which is situated in the Trastevere district of the city – specialises in Neapolitan-style pizza.
Among the varieties on offer here are imperiale – featuring fresh tomatoes, cured ham, lettuce and olives – and vittorio, which contains both mozzarella and parmesan cheese, fresh tomatoes and basil. Those who are keen to combine food and football (the latter is another thing that Italians are famously passionate about) on a holiday to the country ought to consider ordering the Maradona. This dish is named after legendary Argentinean footballer Diego Maradona who played for Italian Serie A side Napoli during the 1980s and 90s and is the club’s record goalscorer.
Whatever you eat, I advise you take the time to soak up the restaurant’s beautiful interior. As it is decorated with murals depicting the southern Italian countryside, I’m confident that you’ll find a meal here to be a charming experience.
L’Antica Pizzeria
Visit the L’Antica Pizzeria, which is situated on the Via Genova road, and you’ll be dining in the oldest pizzeria in the city. Established in 1888, this centrally-located establishment has been run by the same family for four generations.
The pizzas on offer here include one that is topped with bacon and smoked cheese, while another contains anchovies and courgette flowers. If you fancy a change from pizza, take a look at the specials menu which includes a calzone stuffed with mozzarella, egg and ham.
L’Antica Pizzeria also serves a fabulous variety of desserts, including tiramisu, lemon delight and ricotta and pear cake, all of which are bound to be the perfect way to finish off your meal.
Dar Poeta
The final Rome pizzeria that I recommend is Dar Poeta on Vicolo del Bologna. You won’t be short of fabulous pizzas to choose from here, with tonno (which contains tuna, artichokes and parsley), pisellino (peas and cooked ham) and patataccia (potatoes, cream cheese and sausage) just three of the delicious varieties that are served, all of which are cooked in a traditional wood-burning oven. A vast array of calzones and salads are served too, while you can wash down your food with a glass of locally-made Italian wine.
I’m sure you’ll enjoy whatever dish you order, though you may be interested to know that the restaurant makes a special point to use slow-risen dough in order to aid digestion of its pizzas.
